Literature Text

I stand amongst the metal shards
that once threatened my life.
The dirt and smoke, so thick it chokes
and cuts through lungs like knives.

The song of shrapnel firing hot
is music to my ears.
For when there is but silence,
that dreaded ringing reappears.

My helmet doesn't fit quite right,
my boots are wearing thin,
but when the call of duty sounds
I'll lead the front line in.

Drop to my knee and say a prayer
sent high on wings of doves.
Soon I will be homeward bound
to family or Heaven above.
I'm not gunna lie, this idea struck me while I was watching my boyfriend play Battlefield 3...
But once I began to write it...sh*t got real. :)

 This one's for the soldiers.
